Firm Profile | Byron & Byron

Byron & Byron is a family legal practice. The Firm first consisted of Barristers-at-law and Solicitors Cecil Oliver Byron, Esq., of “Palm Trees”, Morning Star, Nevis, and Charles Michael Dennis Byron, Esq., his nephew.

The two established Byron & Byron in 1967 with a branch in Nevis operated by Cecil Byron and a branch in St. Kitts operated by Dennis Byron.

Cecil Byron, a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple Inn of Court, was called to the Bar of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla in March 1958 and established a general legal practice in Nevis. He was the first Nevisian to act as Attorney General of the Colony of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla. He also acted as Warden of the island of Nevis.

Dennis Byron is now more properly addressed as The Right Honourable Sir Dennis Byron, P.C., being a life member of Her Majesty’s Privy Council, and a Knight of the Realm.

In 1960, Sir Dennis was the winner of the Leeward Islands Scholarship, having topped the results of the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examinations in that year in Antigua, Montserrat, and St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla. Sir Dennis studied law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University from 1962-1966 during which time he was awarded the degree of B.A. (later upgraded to M.A.) (Cantab), and a postgraduate degree of LL.B. (Cantab). Sir Dennis was called to the Bar in St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla in 1966.

Sir Dennis currently holds the office of President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, the highest Court in the Caribbean Community. Sir Dennis recently served two terms as President of the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), in which office he was accorded the status of an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Sir Dennis is a Bencher of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple Inn of Court and is a Fellow of his Alma Mater Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University.

In 1972, Terence V. Byron, brother of Sir Dennis, joined Byron & Byron in St. Kitts. Terence Byron, a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple Inn of Court, was the winner of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Statehood Scholarship in 1967 for his results in the Cambridge G.C.E. Advanced Level Examinations. Terence Byron entered Cambridge University in 1968, taking a Degree in Modern Languages and Law at Fitzwilliam College in 1971. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 1972 and to the Bar of St. Kitts-Nevis in November 1972.

Cecil Byron served as Magistrate for the island of Nevis from 1980 to 1998.

Sir Dennis was appointed a Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in 1982, and was sworn in as Chief Justice of that Court in 1999. He has been a member of the Judiciary for over 30 years.
